Selecting a username in the live chat, available on the Live page, stores a device identifier in the visitor's browser to associate that username with the device on return visits. The username and message content are stored to operate the chat.
The first time a username is claimed, the site performs a one-time lookup of the visitor's public IP address, used only to detect ban evasion. The address is deleted automatically 90 days after the username is claimed.
